Born in 1959 in Skopje, Republic of Macedonia, he is a director, photographer and the author of essays. His first feature-length film, Before the Rain, filmed in Macedonia shortly after the end of the Balkan conflict, won the Golden Lion at the Venice Film Festival in 1994 and a nomination for an Oscar. In 2001 he returned to the Venice Film Festival out of competition with Dust, set between today’s New York and the old American West. He subsequently directed two other feature films: Senki (Shadows, 2007) and Majki (Mothers, 2011), which was presented in the Panorama section of the Berlin Film Festival in 2011. In 2012 he returned to Venice as a member of the Orizzonti jury. Manchevski has directed more than fifty short films including 1.73, Tennessee (Mtv Award as Best Rap Video) and Macedonia Timeless, and worked as a director for the TV series The Wire, on HBO. He is the author of books and essays, including the post-Conceptualist book The Ghost of My Mother and Truth and Fiction: Notes on (Exceptional) Faith in Art, which talks about faith and the relationship between reality and fiction in the work of art. His two books of photography, Street and Fie Drops of Dream, were the objects of two separate exhibitions, at the Museum of Contemporary Art and recently at the Miyako Yoshinaga Gallery. He has conceived and produced many artistic performances, as both a solo artist and as a founding member of the 1AM group. He has lived in New York since 1985.
