Leni Riefenstahl and Dino Alfieri, Minister of Popular Culture, in Venice in 1938: the German director won for Olympia jointly with Goffredo Alessandrini for Luciano Serra pilota (Luciano Serra, Pilot). Both films, apart from their aesthetic qualities, were explicit propaganda films: that year political pressure on the Venice Film Festival intensified, and it was the last year before the War in which American cinema was still featured on the programme. Walt Disney won a prize for Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, the first feature-length animation film produced in the United States.
