Twenty-fifth Venice Film Festival, in a climate of austerity and controversy. “They called it the Festival of austerity, but what an austerity… The big stars deserted the film festival, we had to settle on photographing the starlets”. As for Michelangelo Antonioni’s victory for Il deserto rosso (Red Desert) however, “everyone agreed”. “The Golden Lion”, crowed the announcer, “communicate emotion even to Antonioni, the so-called champion of communication barriers”.
