Introduction by

PAOLO BARATTA

President of La Biennale di Venezia

A first chapter

This is the first year that the Biennale Danza is directed by Marie Chouinard, with whom we agree on the importance of giving the complete four-year programme a unitary strategic direction divided into four parts, to build the more organic structure we wish to give the programmes of the Biennale’s departments. It is no coincidence that the title of this year’s Biennale Danza is First Chapter, and that it is distinguished by a specific focus on a world of contemporary dance on which it will concentrate its attention.
Marie Chouinard enthusiastically accepted the idea of working to further develop the College and advanced proposals in this sense: a programme of particular interest not just for young dancers, but for choreographers as well, with innovative ideas and proposals that are courageous in and of themselves. La Biennale has dedicated much effort to the Dance department – officially introduced in 1999, but represented in the programmes of the Theatre department before that. The presence of Marie Chouinard and her programme are a confirmation of its commitment.
