Arsenale della Danza
Director: Ismael Ivo
Project Focus: Body in Progress
Masterclass Program: 17th January - 15th May, 2011
The auditions for the 25 young dancers who will participate in the activities of the Arsenale della Danza from January 17th to May 15th 2011 were held in three international cities: Venice, Vienna, in collaboration with the ImPulsTanz Festival, and São Paolo, Brazil, in collaboration with the SESC (Serviço Social do Comércio).
The new international formation includes 12 dancers from Italy, including 2 from the Veneto region: Angius Sara (22 years old, from Alghero), Emanuela Biazzi (22 years old, from Cremona), Loretta D’Antuono (22 years old, from Milan), Roberta De Rosa (24 years old, from Caserta), Giuseppe Paolicelli (24 years old, from Matera), Andrea Rampazzo (23 years old, from Padua), Armando Rossi (22 years old, from Naples), Claudia Sansone (23 years old, from Pavia), Valentina Schisa D’Apuzzo (24 years old, from Naples), Elisabetta Violante (20 years old, from Caserta), Chiara Vittadello (34 years old, from Mestre), in addition to Claudio Pisa (23 years old, from Naples), one of last year’s most talented students. The 12 foreign dancers come from the United States (Noelle Cotler and Dujuan Smart, 21 years old, Patrick Cubbege, 20 years old), Sweden (David Lagerqvist, 19 years old), Greece (Ariadne Mikou, 30 years old), Canada (Pamela Tzeng, 23 years old), Russia (Anastasia Voronina, 24 years old) and Brazil (Cristian Rebouças da Silva and Lucas Ribeiro Saraiva, 21 years old, Leonardo Magalhães Muniz, 23 years old, Flávio da Silva Arco-Verde, 20 years old and Felipe Vian, 19 years old).
Created to give an impulse to creativity, especially in young dancers, and to help introduce them to the professional world, the acknowledgment of the work done by the Arsenale della Danza lies in the results achieved by some of the participants in the past two years. From Venice, eighteen-year-old Roberto Lazzariflew off to New York and the prestigious Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater, where he attended a summer school session on scholarship, renewed this year for a further 5-month session. Stefano Roveda and Pavel Zhukov captured attention at the auditions held by Virgilio Sieni for his next production; Marta Lastowska was recommended for William Forsythe’s company. Francesco Colaleo, finally, won a scholarship for “Modem”, the specialization course at the school of Roberto Zappalà.
“We can imagine the body as a unique sort of orchestra, that must make each and every one of its parts play, exactly like the many instrument sections that correspond to the entire range of movements. But when the body-orchestra starts to tune its instruments and prepares to perform the symphony, it is crucial to have the experience to respond to such an elevated task. It is at that moment that the dancer must be able to identify the space and have the competence to use it, experimenting and refining the skills he has already acquired” (Ismael Ivo). Body in progress, the title given by Ivo to the third year of the Arsenale della Danza, focuses on this specific moment.
Developed around 7 cycles of master classes held by internationally renowned choreographers and dancers, this year the lessons will concentrate, given the growing number of aesthetics that make up the dance world today, on some of the techniques that have had the most powerful influence on the development of contemporary dance, influencing its progress, and on the styles that more than others have placed the accent on the social significance of dance. From William Forsythe’s improvisation method to the repertoire of movements by Anne Theresa de Keersmaeker with Rosas, up to the most recent evolutions of German dance-theatre, from the school of Katherine Dunham that brings Afro-Caribbean rituals to the centre of dance, to the American funk styles and the exquisitely Brazilian martial art of the capoeira.
Every cycle of master classes will end with a demonstration open to the public on the last day of the programme: these events, entitled Open Doors, will always be held at 6:00 p.m. at the Teatro Piccolo Arsenale. An opportunity for all dance-lovers, specialists and not, to further their understanding observing the work in progress of the protagonists of international dance at work with 24 young dancers, who in turn will be able to confront their skills with the professional stage and with the public. Since the first year of its inception, in fact, the Arsenale della Danza has considered the development of a performance under the guidance of Ismael Ivo to be an essential part of the training.
