Biennale College - Dance 2015

As of 2013, la Biennale di Venezia has renewed its mission in all of its fields. In addition to its work to promote knowledge among the general public (Exhibitions and Festivals) it has introduced a strategic programme to train young artists. Known as the Biennale College, this programme is already underway in the fields of Dance, Music, Theatre and Cinema. To encourage young talents, offering them the opportunity to work side by side with the masters to develop “creations”: this is the spirit of the Biennale College, a well-appointed bridge that allows young people who wish to engage in one of the arts to do so under the best conditions that an international institution can offer.

Biennale College Dance 2015 is open to dancers over the age of 18 with consolidated experience in the techniques of contemporary dance.
The project will include an educational and training programme led by contemporary dance teachers, with the formation of groups composed of dancers led by a guest choreographer. These are courses leading to the creation of short choreographic works that will be presented to the public on the 25th, 26th, 27th and 28th June 2015, as part of the Biennale College Dance 2015 event titled “The dignity of gesture” directed by Virgilio Sieni.

All the original creations will be the result of a period of residency of choreographers and dancers in Venice.

CLAUDIA CASTELLUCCI (Italy)
Title of the Creation: ESERCITAZIONI RITMICHE
Dates: the course will be held in Venice from 22 to 28 June 2015 every day (6 hours a day)
Participants: dancers up to the age of 30
The final phase will include a presentation of the choreographic work open to the public in Venice.
The workshop Esercitazioni ritmiche illustrates in the form of exercises the contents of the new book by Claudia Castellucci “Setta. Scuola di tecnica drammatica” published by Quodlibet.
The purpose of the workshop is to transmit certain directions that link the artist’s experimentation to time and rhythm with particular attention to the moment of transition from one gesture to another in dance. The purpose of the exercises is to explore the concept of “duration”; the sense of a continuous presence over time and, above all, in the passage from one position to another.
The following are the research directions:
1. Circular rhythmic dance. This is a metronomic dance, in which the movement follows the beat of the music exactly. It is important to incorporate the rhythm with the awareness that one is stepping into an important existing movement. Here time appears as something that can also be measured. It is not an exterior dance.
2. Chance, which disrupts order, and can be the result of error or of the combination between two or more elements that randomly intersect to generate a new reality. To consider chance, in dance, and even to give it importance, teaches immediate response. Immediate, but not instinctive, when addressing something new. “Chance” is treated as a movement that extends, and does not extinguish.
3. The psychology of duration. These are exercises that require executing simple actions focusing attention on one’s own presence, a presence that should not take any previous idea into consideration, but must proceed moment by moment, simply consummating the action, that is to say thinking only about the action that must be executed. Starting from the beginning, one proceeds in the action in relation to its development and in relation to its ending. The action is experienced as something new that can only be understood moment after moment, along with the determination of those who already understand it.
4. The “diabatic or transpiercingdance. Specific attention is paid to the part of dance that deals with the passage from one position to another. The idea is to highlight the shadow time of the transition from one gesture to another, to fully experience the duration of movement.
