Biennale College - Dance

Director Virgilio Sieni

As of 2013, La Biennale di Venezia has renewed its mission in all of its fields. In addition to its work to promote knowledge among the general public (Exhibitions and Festivals) it has introduced a strategic program to train young artists. Known as the Biennale College, this program is already underway in the fields of Dance, Music, Theatre and Cinema. To encourage young talents, offering them the opportunity to work side by side with the masters to develop “creations”: this is the spirit of the Biennale College, a well-appointed bridge that allows young people who wish to engage in one of the arts to do so under the best conditions that an international institution can offer.

Biennale College Dance 2016 is open to dancers over the age of 18 with consolidated experience in the techniques of contemporary dance.
The project consists in an educational and training program led by contemporary dance teachers, with the formation of groups composed of dancers led by a guest choreographer. These are courses leading to the creation of short choreographic works that will be presented to the public from 18th to 26th June 2016 as part of 10th International Festival of Contemporary Dance of the Biennale di Venezia directed by Virgilio Sieni.

All the original creations will be the result of a period of residency of choreographers and dancers in Venice.

The courses will include:
mornings: classes in contemporary technique
afternoons: the creative phase with the choreographer

Dancers may apply to only one of the following choreographic workshops.
Applications to more than one workshop will not be considered.

VIRGILIO SIENI (I)
Dates: the course will be held in Venice from 6 to 26 June
Title of the Creation: DANZE SULLA DEBOLEZZA
Participants: the project is intended for performers over the age of 18 with consolidated experience in the techniques of contemporary dance. The study will concentrate on transmission and resonances through an articular discourse of the body. An exploration of tactility between shared space and the place of the body. The process will also involve citizens and will include the use of objects to build dwellings.
The final phase will include the presentation in Venice of the choreographic work in the form of a performance open to the public.
Venue for practice and performance: Arsenale, Tese Navata 4 and a public open space

The work is inspired by studies of real and parallel botany. It will explore systems of interconnection with the purpose of creating an intimate but shared space and time.

ADRIANA BORRIELLO (I)
Dates: the course will be held in Venice from 8 to 19 June
Title of the creation: LA CONOSCENZA DELLA NON-CONOSCENZA
Participants: the course is intended for dancers between the ages of 18 and 35 with consolidated experience in the techniques of contemporary dance and/or practice of movement and open to work with practices of improvisation and guided composition.
The work is based on an elementary choreographic score that reaches down to the poetic and educational foundations of the proposal – ontological body, musical body, anthropological body – and that constitutes the beginning of a new creative process leading towards an unpredictable new form. The dialogue between text (existing score) and context (who, how, where, when) is an opportunity for re-generation.
The final phase will include the presentation in Venice of the choreographic work in the form of a performance open to the public.
Venue for practice and performance: Arsenale – Sale d’Armi and Teatrino Palazzo Grassi - Foyer

CLAUDIA CASTELLUCCI (I)
Dates: the course will be held in Venice from 10 to 19 June
Title of the Creation: TOWARDS THE SPECIES
Participants: the project is intended for dancers over the age of 18, with academic training, and accustomed to the relationship with music.
The hegemony of the dance we propose is music not the body. Music is the foundation for the physical dialogue. We will not speak of the body, but of uninterrupted physical presence, prepared and determined to address the time that is manifest in the music. The past must be dealt with when it has already converged into the present, and even the pause is a responsible moment of presence. The principal movement will be a concerted ambulation built on some of the canons inspired by the metrics of archaic Greek poetry and the essential movement of horses. Dance is a revelation of individual presence, which emerges from – and thanks to – collective movement.
The final phase will include the presentation in Venice of the choreographic work in the form of a performance open to the public.
Venue for practice and performance: Ca’ Giustinian - Sala delle Colonne and a public open space

BORIS CHARMATZ / OLIVIA GRANDVILLE / MAGALI CAILLET- GAJAN (F)
Dates: the course will be held in Venice from 19 to 26 June
Title of the Creation:  LEVÉE DES CONFLITS
Participants: the project is intended for dancers over the age of 18 with consolidated experience in the techniques of contemporary dance.
Levée des conflits (2010) by Boris Charmatz will be transmitted by dancers, choreographers Magali Caillet-Gajan and Olivia Grandville. A group of amateurs will join the course.
The final phase will include the presentation in Venice of the choreographic work in the form of a performance open to the public.
Venue for practice and performance: Ca’ Giustinian - Sala delle Colonne and a public open space

EMANUEL GAT (F)
Dates: the course will be held in Venice from 8 to 21 June
Title of the Creation: VENICE

A condensed process with a selected group of dancers, this workshop is an accelerated creation of a new piece by Emanuel Gat.
The final phase will include the presentation in Venice of the choreographic work in the form of a performance open to the public.
Venue for practice and performance: Arsenale - Sale d’Armi and a public open space

THOMAS HAUERT (CH)
Dates: the course will be held in Venice from 20 to 26 June
Title of the Creation: TOOLS FOR DANCE IMPROVISATIONS
Participants: Movers. The project is intended for dancers/movers over the age of 18 with significant experience in any movement form (dance, sport, martial arts) who love to dance.
Every joint of our body has its range of movement, there are countless possible combinations. The body contains a great practical knowledge far beyond what the mind is capable of processing, resulting in an ever-changing, fluid sense of orientation that can serve as a sensor for potential movement. Through (group) improvisation with one or more partners, exchanging information through touch, we will take advantage of this phenomenon to create forms, rhythms, movement qualities more sophisticated than our minds could invent.
The final phase will include the presentation in Venice of the choreographic work in the form of a performance open to the public.
Venue for practices and performances: Palazzo Trevisan degli Ulivi and a public open space

YASMINE HUGONNET (CH)
Dates: the course will be held in Venice from 12 to 26 June
Title of the Creation: UNFOLDING FIGURES
Participants: the project is intended for dancers over the age of 18 with consolidated experience in the techniques of contemporary dance.
The work is based on a movement practice considering all that is moving: attention, sensation, imagination, not only visible moves. It plays with: De-prioritize the body organization / redistributing stillness and mobility, stability and instability / engaging in dancing as a state of production, and reception at the same time. Working with the idea of Postures as containers (collecting resonances on many levels, sensorial, imaginary, symbolic…) inviting a deep engagement in physicality and attention.
The final phase will include the presentation in Venice of the choreographic work in the form of a performance open to the public.
Venue for practices and performances Teatrino Palazzo Grassi - Foyer and a public open space

ISABELLE SCHAD (D) & LAURENT GOLDRING (F)
Dates: the course will be held in Venice from 17 to 25 June
Title of the Creation: COLLECTIVE JUMPS
Participants: the project is intended for dancers over the age of 18 with consolidated experience in the techniques of contemporary dance with an interest in somatic practices and in visual arts / new forms of representation.
"Collective Jumps" addresses the topics of collectivity and resistance, investigating the possible relationships between freedom and form with a group of performers. Can the creation of an infinite, unified, monstrous body possibly become a site of resistance?
The final phase will include the presentation in Venice of the choreographic work in the form of a performance open to the public.
Venue for practices and performances: Museo di Palazzo Grimani and a public open space

SANDY WILLIAMS / ROSAS (B/CA)
Dates: the course will be held in Venice from 12 to 21 June
Title of the Creation: MY WALKING IS MY DANCING - EXPLORATION OF THE TOOLS AND METHODS OF ANNE TERESA DE KEERSMAEKER AND ROSAS
Participants: the project is intended for dancers over the age of 18 with consolidated experience in the techniques of contemporary dance.
“My Walking Is My Dancing” is a mode of movement generation and analysis that has formed the basis for much of the work of Rosas in the past years.  It serves as a way to question the boundaries between the pedestrian moments of everyday and the virtuosic movements of the performer. It also serves as a frame through which movement and choreography can be evaluated and explored by creating a common vocabulary between all collaborators and serving as an essential shared base from which variation and change can be traced.
Along with the task of “My Walking Is My Dancing”, participants will investigate other core composition techniques employed by Anne Teresa and Rosas in the current repertory and experiment with their application in creation and performance.
The final phase will include the presentation in Venice of the choreographic work in the form of a performance open to the public.
Venue for practices and performances: Conservatorio B. Marcello and a public open space
