58th International Festival of Contemporary Music

Director: Ivan Fedele

20th-21st September, 3rd > 12th October 2014

A tribute to Steve Reich, Golden Lion for Lifetime Achievement, with the Orchestra del Teatro Petruzzelli of Bari conducted by Jonathan Stockhammer on September 20th and 21st opened the 58th International Festival of Contemporary Music, which continued its programme from October 3rd to 12th.

With the title Limes, director Ivan Fedele has turned this year to cultures and music that are far in time and space. With the Eco Ensemble of Berkeley and the music of the Bay Area, the Orquesta Sinfonica de Euskadi, between the Basque tradition and modernity, the Meitar Ensemble of Tel Aviv, the Violinat e Lapardhase polyphonic choir in the Albanian tradition, and Anatolian music reinterpreted in the ethno-cultural improvisations of the Galata Electroacoustic Orchestra.

There were 20 new compositions at the Festival, 13 of which received their world-premiere. Many of the composers in the programme are young, and often quite unknown on Italian stages but widely represented in international programmes. They included Eduard Hamel, Amir Shpilman, Daniele Ghisi, Ondrej Adámek, Ofer Pelz, Silvia Borzelli, Aaron Einbond, Giovanni Dario Manzini, Yotam Haber, Dai Fujikura, John MacCallum, Oscar Bianchi, and Stefano Bulfon, among others.
