String Quartet of the Teatro La Fenice

Luigi Nono

Fragmente - Stille, an Diotima was commissioned from Nono by the City of Bonn for the 30th Beethovenfest. The quartet was performed for the first time at Bonn-Bad Godesberg in 1980 by the LaSalle Quartett, to which the piece was also dedicated and which, with the agreement of Luigi Nono, decided to set it alongside the performance of a Beethoven quartet.

The apparently new pairing of Nono and Beethoven has earlier cases in the recent past but, now like 30 years ago, it still entails creating a set of references in which the writing for the string quartet is the protagonist which, although of a firm structure, provides a melting pot for creativity and linguistic innovation.

With good reason therefore, Nono and Beethoven are again performed together by the strings ensemble of the Teatro La Fenice, which will perform first the Quartet Opus 18 number 2 and then Fragmente - Stille, an Diotima. Both are pieces with a complex compositional structure (despite the apparent lightness of Beethoven’s quartet).

The String Quartet of the Teatro La Fenice will open its recital with a piece by Carlo De Pirro as a tribute to the late composer, who passed away in May this year.
