Other Roots

These songs, originally without any instrumental accompaniment, have over time evolved and been perfected, gaining an increased following and appreciation, especially for important ceremonies such as weddings in which the cantadores would provide songs suited to the occasion, wishing the bride and groom and all those present all good luck.

Later, the voices of the “Cantadores” were joined by a small organ, subsequently replaced by the guitar. During this long process of development, lasting about 60 years, we find the cantadores in country fairs, still involved in singing competitions between the various participants, initially accompanied by the organ and later by the guitar and, by the end of 1950s, by the accordion together with guitar.

In the middle of the evening, set between the performances of the Cantadores and of the Concordu, there will be a concert that arises from the dialogue between the composer and a virtuoso of the millenary tradition of the tabla, Trilok Gurtu, who has worked with the greatest names in jazz and world music – from legends such as Don Cherry, Joe Zawinul, John McLaughlin, Pat Metheny and Jan Garbarek – with keyboard player Franco D’Andrea, himself with an extremely rich repertoire, and the standard-bearer of an Italian jazz that is appreciated beyond the borders. A highly original improviser, D’Andrea is also extremely responsive to the relationship with the past. They are joined by trumpet player Fabrizio Bosso, dubbed “best new talent” in jazz in a referendum held by Musica Jazz magazine in 1999.

The climax of the evening will be this “trio fusion”, when the music will materialise thanks to a continuous metamorphosis and research for stylistic synthesis.
