AT THE CARNIVAL, EVERY MASK COUNTS

This activity is reserved especially for small children, who through a fantastic tale and a creative workshop will be able to explore the contemporary arts and depict them in the form of masks and costumes to be worn during the children’s carnival in the Giardini.

INDOSS/ARTI PROJECT
Dedicated to 1st level secondary schools
A project involving the analysis of works, installations, performances and depictions focussing on the production of experimental and innovative carnival costumes representing the contemporary arts in allegorical fashion. An initial session spent exploring and planning is followed by a second one in the Giardini venue, in which the students of each class make the costume they have planned.

COSTUME WORKSHOPS
Dedicated to 2nd level secondary schools
An exploration through observation of a selection of works, installations, performances and depictions geared to the production of masks and original costumes. An initial session spent exploring and planning is followed by a second one in the Giardini venue, in which the students of each class, using unusual and recycled materials, will be invited to use the model they have made beforehand to produce the costumes representing the various art disciplines via appropriate expressive choices.

With this initiative, the Biennale’s educational “creativity system” – which is already operative with increasing success during the events throughout the Veneto – for the first time offers a contribution of particular significance to the forthcoming Venice Carnival 2010, in full coordination with the programme organised by Venezia Marketing & Eventi for the Venice City Council.

The Creativity Garden will combine the Carnival with the art disciplines typical of the Biennale itself in an original manner.
The colours of art, the sounds of music, the fantasies of theatre, the magic of dance, the utopia of architecture and the dreams of cinema will all blend at the Palazzo delle Esposizioni in the Giardini, in a single container that will draw visitors into an unusual discovery of the contemporary arts, all under the banner of the Carnival festivities.

With this initial project, the Biennale intends to maintain its educational activities busy throughout the year. The activities are aimed at the young and their families to facilitate an interest in the contemporary arts and are implemented with the support of the Venice Chamber of Commerce in open dialogue with the Province of Venice’s Cultural Affairs Department to increase its activities in the territory.

In 2009, the Biennale’s education activities recorded an increase in participants of 25% on 2007, involving 26,943 individuals, of whom
- 3,551were small children (+ 48%)
- 67% were students
and hailing from
- 38 countries
- 65 provinces around Italy
- 3,321 individuals were involved in projects effected outside Venice

Costumes and accessories made during the Creativity Garden will remain on show in the Palazzo delle Esposizioni. Subsequently, those who wish to participate will be able to process from the Giardini to St Mark’s during the Shrove Tuesday parade (16 February).
