The German composer, Helmut Lachenmann, was awarded the Golden Lion for Lifetime Achievement at the 52nd International Festival of Contemporary Music (2nd - 18th October 2008). The awards ceremony took place on Friday 3rd October at the Teatro alle Tese in the Venice Arsenale during the Festival.

The 52nd International Festival of Contemporary Music takes place in Venice between 2nd and 18th October 2008. The Festival is titled Roots / Future and is directed by Luca Francesconi.

Luca Francesconi is the new Director of the Music Section of the Venice Biennale. His appointment was approved on 6th February 2008 by the Board of directors, providing him with a four-year mandate foreseeing not only the direction of the International Festival of Contemporary Music but also responsibility for permanent activities based around a research project.
