Ca’ Giustinian - Sala delle Colonne 6 p.m.: meeting with the audience

I always took a keen interest in gangsters. The gangster’s life teeters dangerously on the borderline between ecstasy and the abyss. The gangster is a performer who personifies society’s prohibitions on stage. His transgressions awaken our imagination while his penalty is our catharsis.

Is the gangster a Saint? He is superior to all of us, he is a magnet for anything which flits around and is drawn in by his aura. His position of outlaw exposes him to all kinds of dangers.

My stage is a sort of laboratory in which the senses and instincts are tested. The reactions, the obstinacy, the backgrounds and characters of the performers influence the direction of my observations. It is that interaction that fascinates me.

In many ways, it’s a matter of being slave and master to each other in just the right way.
