Future Island is an experimental project that captures in miniature, through architecture, the planet’s response to climate change. More than just a preliminary tool for measuring adaptive behaviors, the project uses simulation to create a shared imaginary of our possible future.
Future Island is an island of stones, a pioneer landscape that will evolve over the next 100 years. It is a micro-ecosystem, a biotope of plants and animals, that is constantly adapting to slowly changing conditions. The island is divided into two zones along the latitude of 59°21’20.32”N: a warm zone in the north and a cold zone in the south. The warm zone is a landscape of heated rocks and soil, up to 5°C warmer than its surroundings. The rocks are heated by solar panels mounted on the surrounding buildings. This creates a perpetually future environment that corresponds to current global warming predictions. The landscape undergoes conditions similar to those of flora and fauna on the front lines of climate change.
