THE DYING SWANS PROJECT

In the winter of 2020, hope seemed to die just like the proverbial swan. But difficulties have always given wings to Eric Gauthier. His aim with The Dying Swans Project was to open up a new perspective during lockdown for 64 artists from dance, choreography, music and film. Sixteen choreographers created a solo for the 16 members of Gauthier Dance//Dance Company Theaterhaus Stuttgart. The commissions also included scores and filming. Culture cannot be stopped! Since its launch in April 2021, the project has won many awards and nominations.

PAESAGGIO MUSICA DANZA SABURO TESHIGAWARA | FRANCESCO TRISTANO

Saburo Teshigawara, master of Japanese contemporary dance, and his dancer Rihoko Sato meet pianist and composer Francesco Tristano at the Teatro Comunale in Ferrara. A performance- concert entitled Landscape in which dance flows in a magnetic relationship with the music of Bach, Cage and Tristano. The Classica HD documentary enters the heart of the creation through rehearsals and performance, leaving to the three protagonists the role of accompanying the spectator in the unpredictable flow of the relationship between music and dance. A journey into the qualities of movement and the timing of a relationship.

HOLE IN SPACE

The artists Kit Galloway and Sherrie Rabinowitz, who in 1980 created a “hole in space” between New York and Los Angeles with a satellite feed, inspired Diego Tortelli. Six dancers from Munich, Berlin and Milan, a performer from Berlin, a videographer from Munich and a musician from London met online with Tortelli, individually at first – uniting only the day before the premiere. They use all the possibilities of the online world to overcome their physical distance, and then celebrate the first moment of coming together in all its spontaneity and elation.

In this research based on the body as a machine and as a human Tetris puzzle, time and space collapse in the density of bodily interaction. While we can define a single body as human, the “threading” between them and the interaction with space and sound is the engine that creates new movements and capacities that are possible precisely when the complexity of the individual serves to harness the power of the group.

ELEKTRO MATHEMATRIX

Electro dance is what these high school students are really into. Any school activity leads them into wild choreography. Derived from Blanca Li’s ElektroKif stage show, which has toured around the world, Elektro Mathematrix is a singular urban musical. Full of humor and sensibility, and without dialogue, it is a statement about what it is to be at school today, and living as an electro dancer. Electro dance, born a few years ago in France, is one of the most original urban dance styles, popular among high school students around the world.

BURNING DAYLIGHT

Burning Daylight is a dance film project. The performance is set from late night until dawn in a transit zone outside a notorious pub on a Broome-style karaoke night. A series of contemporary dance scenes unfolds expressing the friction, local humour and cultural collision in the streets at night in the part of Broome known as “The Bronx”.

imagine... Wayne McGregor: Dancing on the Edge profiles arguably Britain’s most ground-breaking dance pioneer. Resident Choreographer at The Royal Ballet and director of his own company, Wayne McGregor’s achievements know no bounds. Alan Yentob joins Wayne in his role as Artistic Director at the Biennale Danza in Venice, creating a production with his own company, and in the run-up to the rapturously acclaimed Dante Project at the Royal Opera House, London. Wayne, however, was brought up on John Travolta and rave music – so look out for a little ABBA along the way.

The director Alan Yentob will attend the screening. A talk with Wayne McGregor and Alan Yentob will follow (30' approx).

HAPPY TOGETHER

Po-wing and Yiu-fai are a gay couple who decide to move from Hong Kong to Argentina in search of a future. Po-wing and Yiu-fai could not be more different, despite their very strong bond. Wong Kar-wai splendidly builds Happy Together around their torment and their distance: the chronicle of a love that is as longed-for as it is impervious, painful, with the famous song by the Turtles in counterpoint. Will the couple withstand the shocks of their new life, or will the famous tango scene be the omen of an inevitable farewell?
