The International Kids’ Carnival

The 11th edition of the International Kids’ Carnival will run from Saturday 15 to Sunday 23 February 2020, organised by La Biennale di Venezia chaired by Paolo Baratta. The initiative will take place in the Biennale headquarters at Ca’ Giustinian in Venice (San Marco, 1364/A), featuring free workshop activities (booking required at Tel. +39 041 5218828, E-mail promozione@labiennale.org) for schools from Monday to Friday and for families on Saturdays and Sundays.

The International Kids’ Carnival is an Educational project of La Biennale di Venezia that was established in 2010: it is aimed at the young, schools and their teachers, and families, and intends to stimulate creativity and the participation of youngsters through workshops, contests, creation of masks and costumes so as to encourage the active involvement of participants.

The programme will include Days for schools and Weekends for families, a section titled The Magnificents and devoted to projects developed by participating schools, and workshops realised with the direct involvement of students.

The following Countries will participate in the 11th International Kids’ Carnival with their workshops: Germany with Acrobats of the Language, Kosovo with Kosovar Filigree, the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela with The Coloured Violin, as well as the Conservatorio Benedetto Marcello and the social cooperative Il Cerchio, both based in Venice.

On the opening day of 15 February, the Silver Lion for Creativity award will be presented to winning schools at Ca’ Giustinian: this is a special initiative devoted to Italian schools from primary to secondary level that submitted their own projects of creativity applied to arts.

This year the 11th International Kids’ Carnival will once again present a programme of activities connected to scientific issues, Mathematics and Sea Sciences in particular, collaborating with the Istituto Veneto di Scienze, Lettere ed Arti and the CNR - ISMAR, Consiglio Nazionale delle Ricerche – Istituto di Scienze Marine.

We would like to thank F.I.L.A. Fabbrica Italiana Lapis ed Affini, and their brand Giotto that is the Official Colour of the 11th International Kids’ Carnival, and Vela – VeneziaUnica.

Math workshop - Mathematics and statistics: the cube of fun!

A workshop to come to grips with the imagination of spatial geometry and multidimensional data, moving through a route that starts from sight and touch and ends with abstract reasoning. Games of mathematics and statistics, visualization of numbers and tables, and solving the Soma cube invented by Piet Hein.

Why does light and heavy water exist? What does determine this difference? What happens when we come across water with different weight? How do the properties of water change in relation to its content of salt? These phenomena will be explained with simple experiments and represented artistically so that participants may bring a little piece of science home.
In collaboration with the Istituto di Scienze Marine del Consiglio Nazionale delle Ricerche.
