A performance by Abror Zufarov and Shamshod Isaev playing traditional instruments – tanbur, sato, nai and ghijak – and presenting the unique musical culture of Uzbekistan to international audiences. Traditionally, these instruments were connected to Sufi dervishes, practices of spirituality and wisdom. Abror Zufarov is a virtuoso musician playing the string instruments tanbur, sato and dotâr. Throughout the last 20 years of his professional life, Zufarov has been striving to reconstruct the authentic sound of the tanbur that was lost in the 1930s by reviving the metrical pattern of the instrument, thus bringing a new sound to the Shashmaqom tradition. His collaborator Shamshod Isayev is a musician from Uzbekistan who plays traditional instruments nai and gkijak. He has been actively performing at international competitions and festivals in Italy, Germany, Greece and the Republic of Uzbekistan, bringing contemporary reading to the philosophy and sounding of traditional Uzbek music.
