“A reinterpretation of the noir with almost metaphysical ambitions, with one eye to Melville’s stylised cinema and the other to Peckinpah (…) in its dry and fatalistic violence. The world described here is one that has definitively withdrawn into itself, whose values are precarious and trends are self-destructive, where there is no room for psychology and the spaces are reduced to pure, almost abstract geometric forms. The reason for the car chase therefore becomes a perfect embodiment of the desire to flee a hostile environment it is impossible to live in harmony with (…). The film broke new ground with the choice to contrast the hyperrealism of the urban landscape with an almost unconscious dimension of waking nightmare or hallucinatory vision. An obvious model for Drive by Nicolas Winding Refn”. (Paolo Mereghetti)
