Architecture  - Encounter

Island

Exploring the relationship between cultural production and architecture through poetry, language and sound, Tate Collective will look at how our surroundings affect creative process. Using young people's lived experience as a departure point, what does it mean to be, work or live within a space? How do we connect to seen and unseen structures in the cities and spaces around us? Where does culture happen and why? Deconstructing and reconstructing the nature of cultural spaces, the group will consider what our future cities and civic and cultural spaces could look like. Visitors to Island are welcome to join Tate Collective and young artists for a series of experiments, conversations, performances and online in response to Freespace.

Tate Collective will explore the pockets of inner-city London culture through poetry and sound, culminating in a special radio show and live performance.
Together with sound collective Touching Bass and writer Abondance Matanda, they will draw on Nuff Evil, a written piece by Abondance in response to Freespace that ‘explores inner-city spaces that can be seen as low-culture through the six senses of a hood girl’. From dancehalls to pirate radio, what role does architecture play in the cultural production of young London today? How have marginalised communities utilised London’s concrete jungle architecture to produce new forms of culture, music and sound?
Visitors to Island can enjoy the free daily takeovers of the tea sessions exploring different eras of the Black-British experience, and drop in to see a live collaboration in progress, building to a radio show (to be created on NTS Radio in London in September) and live performance on Friday 31.
