Synopsis

In September 1943, BBC war correspondent Wynford Vaughan-Thomas boarded a Lancaster bomber with his recording engineer and a microphone. They documented a terrible ordeal – a major night-time bombing raid over Berlin. Flying to the heart of Nazi-occupied Europe, they endured endless flak and a night fighter attack, as they dropped bombs on the city below – a sight described by Vaughan-Thomas as “the most beautifully horrible sight I’ve ever seen”.
1943: Berlin Blitz recreates this fearless report in VR, putting the viewer amid the fear and fire, to present timeless BBC archive material in a brand new way.

Director’s Statement

This is an accurate retelling of one of the most famous bombing raids over Berlin during World War II. What makes this raid special is the fact that this was the first time an actual cockpit recording was created during action as the BBC had placed a war correspondent onboard. This experience uses that audio to recreate history for the end user.
