The next edition of the Venice Biennale's International Festival of Contemporary Music will run September 23 to October 2, 2010, directed for the third time by Luca Francesconi. This will be the 54th edition of the Festival, titled Don Giovanni and the man of stone.
  The program includes 27 world premieres (of which 18 commissioned by La Biennale), 15 Italian premieres, 77 composers, 31 events including concerts, installations, audio-visual performances, choral music as well as workshops, seminars, and meetings.

Since 1930, the Festival has featured new compositions, European and world premieres, great orchestras and prestigious ensembles and soloists, confirming its vocation for research and the attention to new trends. Luca Francesconi (left, with György Kurtág and Paolo Baratta), among the most esteemed and performed contemporary composers, has been the director of the Biennale Music section since 2008.

Wolfgang Rihm to receive Golden Lion

The prestigious award will be presented to German composer Wolfgang Rihm, whose works are frequently performed at home and abroad and whose music always rooted in the matter of sound, in rhythmic and harmonic force, with a lucid formal organisation often on a vast scale. The award ceremony will take place during the 7th Intl. Festival of Contemporary Music (23rd September > 2nd October 2010).
