Synopsis

Il posto [The Job] tells the story of a young man from a poor Milanese family, shy, unexceptional, resigned to his fate from the outset, who is looking, as the title implies, for a “job”, for an occupation of any kind to dedicate his life to. Over the modesty of this ambition the modern bureaucracy based on “tests” and on human relations, on Taylorism and on company canteens, fits like a glove. It is a more intelligent kind of exploitation than in the past and therefore a more dangerous one.”

Alberto Moravia, L’Espresso, Oct 15, 1961

“It is nothing and everything, this ever so light cinematic tale that saddens and enchants; any overarching, generic judgment, demeans it and gets it wrong. [...] We congratulate Olmi. He is an authentic and indeed a wonderful storyteller, able to make thoughts visible and tangible: to such an extent that out of the shadows of very ordinary action he has extracted a blaze of uncommon and noble impressions.”

Giuseppe Marotta, L’Europeo, Oct 1, 1961

Director's Statement

It is an initiation: he comes from the rural world, because he still lives in Meda, in the farmhouse of his father, who despite being a factory worker still has his home in the countryside; in front of his house, where until just a few years earlier there were cowsheds, people are beginning to park their mopeds and Fiat Seicentos. So this young man from Meda, who still carries the smell of the cowsheds with him, goes to Milan to work in an office. He arrives in the big city, the city of the Metro and sees a beautiful Milanese girl... It’s an initiation.
