Synopsis
Inspired by a real-life event in Calabria at the end of World War II, it tells the story of young Michele Rende, who has become an outlaw after being falsely accused of murder. The development of the tragic events is seen through the eyes of the adolescent Nino whose sister Miliella decides to follow the diffi cult fate of the daredevil and rebellious youth. It is set against the backdrop of the slow and diffi cult changes taking place in the feudal structure of southern Italian society. The fi lm is based on Giuseppe Berto’s homonymous novel.

Director’s Statement
I fi lmed it in absolute freedom because the producer Angelo Rizzoli did not restrict me in any way: I was in Calabria for eleven months and supervised the fi lm myself. I shot 200,000 metres of fi lm with a tiny crew, this time with sound, and made it with an entirely local cast. We used 600 extras for the land occupation scenes.
