This fi lm was made during Ruiz’s time as fi lm commissar of Unidad Popular, the union of centre-left parties that ruled Chile with Salvador Allende between 1970 and 1973. It was fi lmed on 28 March 1971 during the large peasant march in Temuco organised to celebrate the law “protecting” the Mapuche Indio people which gave them full citizenship with all the relative rights. What emerges from the stories of the elderly people are the persecutions and exploitation that they endured for centuries.
language: Mapuche, Spanish - s/t English, Italian
In the morning we fi lmed the march and in the afternoon we fi lmed a conversation with two Mapuches. I edited these two types of material as if they were part of a Kulesov experiment, trying to listen to the concerns of the Mapuche people with the aim of Unidad Popolar resolving their problems.
