Young Luciano Mainardi’s father is awarded custody after splitting up with his wife. He does not want the boy to stay with her and sends him to a boarding school run by priests. Close to his mother and used to spending his days in the open countryside with his dog, Luciano fi nds it hard to adapt to his new life and schoolmates: he clams up and does not have any friends. He suffers in silence, missing his family environment whilst the obtuse priests, who are only worried about discipline, repress his every impulse.

I made this fi lm because I wanted to expose the traumas that the pre-Vatican Council II Catholic education infl icted on so many human beings. In the 1950s Catholicism was the paradigm of violence, dishonour and bullying. In the fi lm there are insensitive priests who talk about Christ but do not know him.
