69th Venice International Film Festival
Director: Alberto Barbera
Five directors talk about aspects of the long career of one of the greats of cinema. He has not always been appreciated by critics but always loved by audiences; he was brusque with his collaborators and harsh with his actors. Monicelli’s profound humanity is powerfully revealed through the images of his films, his declarations and his talent.

The biggest difficulty in creating a portrait of one of the most prolific and complex Italian filmmakers was mainly that of choosing which aspects to focus on. First of all, we tried to depict Mario’s incredibly intense and complex outlook on life, because his filmmaking is strongly connected to life. We tried that approach ourselves, as well as a group work method that was one of his signature elements. The result is perhaps a partial and incomplete view but, we hope, it is a sincere and direct one, capable of portraying the natural and limitless honesty of a man from another age who has left everyone, including the youngest, with some very powerful tools for interpreting and understanding ourselves in the future.
