Biography
Born in Palermo in 1958, he made his debut in the entertainment business in 1986 with Daniele Ciprì, with whom he inaugurated a solid artistic partnership: together they produced a series of experimental works for a local Sicilian television station. Shortly thereafter they landed on national television appearing regularly in the programmes “Blob”, “Fuori orario. Cose (mai) viste” and “Avanzi” on Rai Tre. Their real claim to fame was the innovative “Cinico TV”, a series of black and white film clips featuring interviews with characters who are marginal, alienated or simply mad: their exploration of the grotesque and of alienation becomes the permanent characteristic of their works. In 1995 Ciprì and Maresco made their debut in feature-length films at the Venice Film Festival with Lo zio di Brooklyn (The Uncle from Brooklyn), presented in the Finestra sulle immagini section. They returned to the Lido in 1999 with the documentary Enzo, domani a Palermo!, presented in the Nuovi territori section. Maresco, who is also a screenwriter, participated in 2000 as a co-author of the screenplay for Sud Side Stori (South Side Story) by Roberta Torre. In 2003 Ciprì and Maresco co-directed Il ritorno di Cagliostro (The Return of Cagliostro), the story of two Sicilian film producers who, in 1947, founded a film studio hoping to compete with Cinecittà: the film was screened in competition at the Venice Film Festival in the Controcorrente section. They returned Out of Competition the following year with Come inguaiammo il cinema italiano – La vera storia di Franco e Ciccio (How We Got the Italian Movie Business Into Trouble: The True Story of Franco and Ciccio), a documentary on the early years in the careers of Franco Franchi and Ciccio Ingrassia.
