The inaugural event of the 8th International Festival of Contemporary Dance, on June 8th at the Teatro alle Tese (at 8:00 p.m.), will be Biblioteca del corpo, the new choreographic work by Ismael Ivo with the 25 dancers of the Arsenale della Danza, young dancers between the ages of 19 and 30 from Italy, the United States, Greece and Brazil. Following its debut in Venice, the new creation by Ismael Ivo will tour through Italy, in collaboration with Arteven, and abroad, in collaboration with the SESC (Serviço Social do Comèrcio) of Sao Paolo in Brazil. Biblioteca del corpo will perform in Legnago (13 June), Vicenza(14 June), Treviso (16 June) and finally in São Paulo in Brazil (27 and 28 June).
Inspired by the famous short story by Borges, The Library of Babel, Ismael Ivo composes his own “library of the body” distributed over many “rooms”, each entitled to a different theme, following a circular route: Cocoon, Marina’s Study, Awakenings, Muybridge’s Study, The Garden of Trails that Come to a Fork, Cocoon.
“In Biblioteca del corpo –writes Ismael Ivo – I continue my physical exploration. I find it infinitely fascinating to see the body as a sensor and a document of our lives and our existence. Biblioteca del corpo is a choreographic installation, a sort of conceptual scaffolding in which bodies are collected like books. The starting point was that notion that each individual in and of himself represents a book that contains unique and original information. This secret information is inimitable. But the individual book must be open to reveal its many aspects, its shortcomings, its qualities and its potential. In this process, every single book, however original, is just one volume in the great human encyclopaedia.
Herein lies the miracle, the challenge and the game. In what order should the books be kept? Is there an obvious combination or a distinct logic to apply? The body is a book. Every function or dysfunction of the body can lead to the key to a new discovery. The symmetrical form is complete only if it can add its opposite. The traditional concept of the perfectly functional body only makes sense if it allows imperfection to coexist. This composition and re-composition is an attempt to transform the physical space. It is a way to explore and reveal new possibilities. At the centre lies the investigation into the creative process. The body is a book of strange ideas and possibilities. This discovery is embraced with passion. It could help us renew our capacity to understand ourselves.”
With Biblioteca del corpo, the production that concludes the study session of the Arsenale della Danza for the year 2012 and at the same time inaugurates the 8th International Festival of Contemporary Dance, the Biennale di Venezia’s programme of workshops and experimentation converges into the activity of the Festival, establishing a working relationship between festival and creativity.
In continuity with the educational programme of the Biennale, which intends to stimulate the interest and perception of the contemporary in young people, providing them with the tools they need to approach it, the month of rehearsals that precedes the debut of the production will also include events dedicated to students. Movement as artistic expression, exploration into the choreographic process, the vocabulary of dance will be clearly and directly demonstrated in the practical-interactive workshops organized in the place of choreographic ideation itself, at the Teatro Piccolo Arsenale, where Ismael Ivo and the 25 dancers of the Arsenale della Danza will unveil the genesis of a production.
