2008 - 2009

In 2008 Ismael Ivo extended his research on the body, that he had focused on in the preceding editions. The 6th International Festival of Contemporary Dance was titled Beauty and the subject investigated from June 14th to 29th with performances, workshops, lectures and a video installation.
A day-long symposium opened the Festival on June 14th at the Corderie dell’Arsenale, attended by dancers and choreographers such as Frédéric Flamand, Stephen Petronio, Michela Lucenti, and Ismael Ivo, and scholars such as Germaine Greer, David Michalek, Loredana Lipperini, and Jeffrey Stewart.
Among the most relevant activities of this edition was the second part of Choreographic Collision, a project that kicked off in 2007 and was realized in collaboration with DanzaVenezia. Now in its second year, the project continued with an experimental production for four young choreographers, invited to develop the theme of beauty and to test their own creativity with a troupe of dance professionals.
On June 17th, the Golden Lion for Lifetime Achievement was presented to the Prague-born artist Jirí Kylián, the choreographer and creative spirit of the Nederlands Dans Theater, who “succeeded in imposing his unmistakable vision of contemporary ballet with the force of genius and grace”.

In 2009 the Biennale Danza celebrated its 10th anniversary. Director Ismael Ivo felt the need to take stock in order to start anew and reflect on the future of dance. The result was an ample and ambitious project summarized in the title Degree Zero, not a real festival but a series of events (for study, reflection, entertainment) that opened a new chapter of the Biennale Danza.
The core of the project was in fact the creation of a national center dedicated to contemporary dance training: the Arsenale della Danza which was organized into a series of seven master classes from March 30 to June 30. The International Contemporary Dance Colloquium with 20 speakers took place at the Auditorium Santa Margherita on 26 and 27 June.

From 20 to 28 June, Degree Zero presented six events and performances for the public. Among them, two world premieres: the new choreography by Michael Clark Company (the diptych Swan Lack and Thank U Ma'am) and the new performance by Ismael Ivo, The Waste Land (that had two repeated performances on 29 and 30 June due to its great success) with the fifteen dancers of the Arsenale della Danza, an international company of young dancers between twenty-two and thirty years of age from Italy, Switzerland, Venezuela, Turkey, Japan, who had the chance to test their skills on the professional scene.
