Like Castellucci, García, Lauwers, Bartís and Ostermeier, Calixto Bieito also claims and takes to a logical conclusion the idea of an art without prejudices, in which everything can be shown.
“Theatre hase given me a freedom that I would never have imagined”, he declares. A freedom to reread the classics, fist of all, because all the art of the 20th century is based on it, and the director’s task is to recreate, like a reporter of his own times, to bring the classics, whether in theatre or opera, to the contemporary world. “What I think I must do is a reading of my time. It is sentiment that truly counts”.
Dedicated to teaching directing and acting throughout Europe for years, Calixto Bieito is one of the leading protagonists of the Spanish stage and loves working with pupils, he declares, because they have boundless energy.
