The new Board of Directors of the Biennale di Venezia, chaired by Paolo Baratta and composed of Giorgio Orsoni (Vice-President), Luca Zaia, Francesca Zaccariotto and Emmanuele Francesco Maria Emanuele, met on 31st January 2012 in the offices of Ca' Giustinian and appointed the Director of the Visual Arts section.
Massimiliano Gioni was appointed by majority Director of the Visual Arts section with the specific responsibility for curating the 55th International Art Exhibition to be held in 2013.

Over 440,000 visitors in 2011
The 54th International Art Exhibition, directed by Bice Curiger and set up at the Giardini and Arsenale venues, and elsewhere around Venice, closed on 27th November 2011. The event attracted over 440,000 visitors, resulting in an increase of 18% when compared to the previous edition in 2009.
The exhibition was titled ILLUMInations and set up in the Central Pavilion at Giardini and Arsenale featuring 83 artists from all over the world.

National Participations and Collateral Events
In 2011, the Exhibition was paralleled by 89 National Participations, a record for the Art Biennale (they were 77 in 2009). The countries that participated for the first time include Andorra, Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, Bangladesh, and Haiti. Other countries participated after a long period of absence.
37 Collateral Events were arranged by international organizations and institutions, featuring exhibitions and initiatives in various locations around the city.
