Antonio Latella - Talk



An actor, director and playwright renowned throughout Europe, Antonio Latella (Castellamare di Stabia – Italy, 1967) has lived in Berlin since 2004. He studied acting at the school of the Teatro Stabile di Torino directed by Franco Passatore and at La Bottega Teatrale in Florence founded by Vittorio Gassman. As an actor he has worked with directors Pippo Di Marca, Luca Ronconi, Giuseppe Patroni Griffi, Massimo Castri, Elio De Capitani, Walter Pagliaro, Tito Piscitelli, and Vittorio Gassman. He achieved fame in Italy and throughout Europe with his work as a director, which he began in 1998, taking his productions to the most important theatres and international festivals, from Avignon to Vienna and Salzburg.

In 2001 he won his first Ubu Prize for the project Shakespeare e oltre, and in 2004 the Gassman Prize as best artist of the year. In 2013 he won his fourth Ubu Prize. As an opera director, he made his debut in 2004 in Lyon with Claudio Monteverdi’s L’Orfeo, followed by Gluck's Orfeo ed Euridice and Tosca by Giacomo Puccini.

Latella’s most recent productions include: A Streetcar named Desire by Tennessee Williams (2012), Die Wohigesinnten (The Kindly Ones), adapted from the monumental novel by French-American author Jonathan Littell, produced by the Schauspielhaus of Vienna with an Austrian cast (2013), The Importance of Being Earnest from Oscar Wilde (2015). In 2016 he presented Oedipus adapted from Sophocles at the Theater Basel and the marathon Santa Estasi - Atridi: otto ritratti di famiglia at the Teatro delle Passioni in Modena with actors and playwrights from the Course in Higher Education of the Fondazione Emilia Romagna Teatri.

In 2011 he founded his own company, the stabilemobile compagnia Antonio Latella.
In the period 2017-2020 he held the position of Artistic Director at the Biennale Teatro in Venice.
He currently is a lecturer and pedagogue at the Accademia d’Arte Drammatica Silvio d’Amico in Rome.
