Synopsis

Kurī hasn’t been back home to the rainforest, Te Urewera, since she was bitten on the face by a dog as a child. After the death of her father, Kurī must return and face the uncertainty of grief — whether she is ready to or not.

Director’s Statement

Kurī is partly inspired by true events. I wanted to create a film that felt modern and ancient at once — a short study exploring how different people process grief. The structure is inspired by Māori folklore and a traditional form of oratory usually performed by men, called whaikōrero. It is an honour to share this pūrākau in Venice.
