Biennale College Musica 2020

The project for the Biennale College – Musica 2020 intends to promote and support the production of a maximum of 4 original compositions for solo instrument, live electronics and real-time video for a maximum length of 10 minutes, to be presented at the La Biennale di Venezia and disseminated online in the appropriate forms.

The selection is open, internationally, to teams consisting of a composer and a video artist, aged 35 years and under.

The composers, who need not necessarily be at their debut work, must present a project in association with a video artist that will involve an instrumental soloist, electronics and real-time video.

The electronic part will be produced at La Biennale di Venezia’s Centro Informatico Musicale e Multimediale (Center for Computer Music and Multimedia), which will provide the required hardware and software, under the guidance of a computer music producer, a sound-engineer, and a video designer who will also be present at rehearsals and at the performances as tutors for the selected young artists.

The work sessions in the studio will be organized after the selection process has concluded, and will be arranged with the teams on the basis of production needs. The electronic part must be sufficiently detailed in the presentation of the project. The feasibility of producing this part will be a fundamental factor in the selection process.

The application for participation must be submitted exclusively as a team (composer and video artist). No substitutions will be allowed within the selected teams.

The project will be coordinated by the Director of the Music Department of La Biennale di Venezia Ivan Fedele, and will feature two 3-week residencies at the CIMM studios in Venice, for a total of 6 weeks dedicated to the composition and realization of the computer music and video parts.

There will also be a production phase in Venice, which will include rehearsals in the theatre.

The work will be organized as follows:

• April 2020: first period of residency in Venice, with the computer music producer, the sound engineer and the video designer.
The Artistic Director Ivan Fedele reserves the right to approve in full or in part the projects developed during this phase, and to invite the teams of the selected projects to participate in the next phase.

• July 2020: second period of residency in Venice, with the computer music producer, the sound engineer and the video designer

• September 2020: third period of residency dedicated to the production and final realization of the works

The performance of the works will be featured as part of the 64th International Festival of Contemporary Music, which will be held from September 25th to October 4th, 2020.

Deadline for applications: March 15th, 2020.

The selection is open internationally.

The selection will be made at the discretion of the Artistic Director of the Music Department of La Biennale di Venezia Ivan Fedele, who may be assisted by consultants of his own choosing. The selection, of up to a maximum of 4 projects, will be announced towards the end of March 2020.

Attendance is mandatory for participation in the project.
The selected participants may stay in an apartment arranged for them by the La Biennale di Venezia.

The participants must pay for their own travel, food and local transportation expenses during each phase of the project.

Each selected applicant will be required to pay a registration fee in the amount of € 80.00 (VAT included, non-refundable) to be paid exclusively by credit card following the announcement of acceptance, and no later than the date that will be designated.

PARTICIPATION REQUIREMENTS

Documentation
The documentation – which must be submitted on or before March 15th, 2020 – must include:

a) The composers must send two scores with the relative recordings
b) The video artists must send two videos they have made as part of a creation associated with a musical score
c) The curriculum vitae of the composer and the video artist
d) The project for the use of live electronics and video and the choice of the instrument for which the score will be composed.
