Eyes of shame (Gėdos akys)

A boiled egg on the plate. An ordinary word. A familiar sound. When a Nurse forces 14-year-old Eyeless to eat at a hospital for troubled teenagers, unfinished memories begin to interrupt reality. The past repeatedly hijacks the present.

I didn’t enter a hospital for troubled teenagers to research a film. I simply wanted to volunteer. I watched children hesitate before drawing a single line, convinced they could not create anything. I heard adults speak about them in front of them, as if the children were deaf. Nothing dramatic. Small, ordinary remarks. Judgements about what children can or cannot do. Repeated often enough to become part of how a child begins to describe themselves. I asked myself: at what point does someone else’s voice become our own? EYES OF SHAME grew from that question. The story begins in a hospital, but it is not about a hospital.
