Biennale College Teatro 2022

Site-specific performance for under 40

Biennale College Teatro 2022
Site-specific performance

The Biennale Teatro intends to promote the call for site-specific performances in 2022 as well.

Consistent with the launch of the call for Italian directors under 35 and Italian authors under 40, the Biennale Teatro continues its efforts to give voice and visibility to those working in the theatre scene, while remaining faithful to its educational mission.

This is a call for an unpublished performance work outdoors, in Venetian campi - places of everyday life in the lagoon - that will be chosen by the artistic direction.
In the attempt to construct a performative gesture in the social perimeters of everyday life, the theatrical event will be placed in vital spaces, reviving the sense of community that art must be able to bring to its citizens.

Considering the great interest that performative authorship arouses today in the rest of the world, so deeply connected with Visual Arts, Music and Dance, La Biennale di Venezia believes it is important and necessary to invite international artists to confront themselves with a scenic writing, such as the site-specific performative one, able to tell the facets of the Contemporary.

The call is open to Italian and foreign performers (+18 and under 40 years of age). Those wishing to participate must not be older than 40 years on the deadline of the call (17 January 2022). The call for proposals is open to performers who propose one of their own creations (in any language or in the absence of a language) that has never made its debut, neither in studio form nor in complete form.
The theme, in line with the concept of the 2022 event, will be Red meant as:

Red is the crime perpetrated. It is the metamorphosis of passion. It is violence, moral deafness in the name of a personal god. It is the trampling of dignity.

Red is also resistance, the responsibility to look at the world no longer as an innocent and parasitic act. Red is not intended as a stop but rather as a conscious action.

The number of people involved in the project (artistic and technical staff) may vary from 1 to a maximum of 4. The performance must be suitable and conceived for an outdoor environment and can only involve the use of audio, costumes and small equipment.

Project phases

Phase 1
Based on the projects and materials submitted by the candidates, the Artistic Directors Stefano Ricci and Gianni Forte will select a limited number of artists (up to a maximum of 15) at the end of January 2022.

Phase 2
The Artistic Direction in Venice (at the end of February 2022) will meet the artists who will illustrate the tools, instruments, materials and dynamics of the creative process, and will present an initial study of the performance in scenic form, with a duration of no less than 7 and no more than 10 minutes.

In case of selection, the modalities of the performance will be the object of analysis and fine-tuning with the Artistic Direction and the production staff of the Biennale in order to identify critical points and adaptability.

At the sole discretion of the Directors, two projects will be selected and considered winners.

The two selected projects will be asked, after the communication of their admission, to pay the secretariat fee (80,00 euro VAT included, non-refundable) exclusively by credit card.

Participation in Phase 2 is at the full expense of the participants.

Final phase
The two winning artistic projects will be defined and developed in all their aspects with the support of the Artistic Directors of the Theatre Department who selected and chose them. They will guarantee their tutoring to arrive at the final production, which will be presented in its completed form directly in site-specific form in Venice during the 2022 edition of the Biennale Teatro. Rehearsals will take place in Venice starting 15 days before the debut.

The performances, for a maximum duration of 30/40 minutes, will become a city appointment during the event.

To this end, the Biennale di Venezia will offer:
· support and assistance for the development of the technical rider;
· coverage of production costs for a maximum total amount of 25,000 euro including the cachet of the people involved, travel and accommodation expenses, rehearsal space, costume design and/or rental costs, technical set-up costs, and any other expenses necessary for the realisation of the project.

Documents

The documents - which must be submitted by 17 January 2022 by means of an application form – must include:

· curriculum vitae
· picture
· performance video of previous works
· project art sheet for Venice 2022 (concept, materials, technique, other)

In case of co-creation, a contact person of the group of artists has to fill in the application form with his/her personal data and: a single word/pdf file containing CVs of the co-creators plus an artistic profile of the project and a performance video of previous works.

Incomplete applications will be automatically excluded.

It is possible to apply for only one of the three Biennale College Teatro 2022 calls (call for Italian Directors under 35 or call for Italian Authors under 40 or call for both Italian and foreign Site-specific performers under 40).
