Man made lake

In the idyllic confines of a gated community in China, young Nita gets her finger bitten by a creature in the neighborhood’s lake. Her French mother, Marie, is determined to find out what’s lurking in the waters – igniting a series of cultural clashes throughout the community.

When my family returned to China after years of living in America, we moved into a gated community, a replica of Western suburban life designed for Chinese families and foreigners alike. Beneath its promise of a multicultural utopia, we sensed a deeper disconnect between the lives we imagined and the lives we were living. Man Made Lake explores this chasm between expectation and reality, personal and cultural values, and the difficulty of fully understanding each other across these divides. I found myself reflecting on the private tensions and fractures I observed during my childhood in 2008, when China welcomed the Beijing Olympics. There was a deeper uncertainty – shared by those of us who left China and adapted abroad, and by those who stayed, witnessing globalisation reshape life at home.
