Mia mera sti zoi tis tzo: kefalaio Faidra (A day in the life of Jo: Chapter Phaedra)

Jo, melancholic, wild and only fifteen, dreams of her last breath. Tiny nuances, signs and symbols of the dream plane will quietly pop up during the day, yet she recognises nothing. All she knows is that she missed the school bus, and her mom does not offer a helping hand. School feels boring and uneventful: a boyfriend that hasn’t learnt how to kiss yet, a class of no interest, random gossip. Thankfully, in singing lesson, out of the blue, everything shifts: Phaedra’s angelic voice mesmerises the whole class and makes Jo cry. In the library’s labyrinth, Jo randomly picks a shiny book but finds Phaedra. After a song, and a couple of important confessions, Jo maybe finds her first real friend ever. The two young girls set up shyly a date for the night, while the sun has his own mystic dance. However, by a simple twist of fate, Jo won’t make it tonight.

Which part of us dreams? Which one desires, fights, cries, which one dies? Are they separate from each other, or are they expressions of a unified whole? Are we the body or do we live in our body? The numbing murder of Alexis, the 15-year-old boy shot by police forces in 2008 in my neighborhood in Athens, out of the blue, urged me in a deep dive into these questions – like every shock does. The fact that I knew nothing about him other than his age and way of death, but I felt, and still feel close to him, acted like an inner awakening, a dark-looking invitation to explore soul, life, death, self and its illusions. Alexis was, still is and forever will be present through his absence, killed but not dead, allowing the space for a film that mystically suggests that there might be a light that never goes out. All we need to do is have our heart open to feel it.
