Una fortaleza

Fifteen-year-old Antu has spent months living inside her occupied high school with her friends. As her mother Mariana’s 50th birthday approaches, Antu is urged to leave the occupation and come home to be with her. Antu wants to, but the gravity of the occupation and the sisterhood she has found there hold her back, even as the threat of eviction looms.

Una Fortaleza emerged from the physical memory of my high school occupation: the cold floor beneath us, the echo of empty hallways, improvised domestic routines and the life shared with my friends. Rather than filming a political slogan, I wanted to capture an atmosphere where the intimate and the collective become inseparable. This is why the film is into Antu’s inner world and the dilemma she faces: leaving the occupation to spend her mother’s birthday with her, or staying alongside her classmates. Within that seemingly simple choice lies a profound transformation: perhaps one of Antu’s first acts of freedom and of disobedience, a quiet refusal of the surveillance through which the adult world seeks to discipline and contain adolescence.
