Ga-neung-han sa-rang (Possible love)

A story of two married couples – a laid-off worker and his spouse and a documentary filmmaker and her spouse – crossing paths to film a documentary and facing their different lives and hidden desires.

Before I begin a film, I must be certain of what it means – to me, to the audience, and to cinema itself. That is why Ga-neung-han Sa-rang took so long to make. When a mass layoff and violent crackdown on a strike shook Korean society, I felt compelled to respond. I hesitated, questioning whether it was right to turn this into a narrative feature. No matter how labour, capital, or other forces shape our lives, I believe we can still move toward freedom – a desire that may itself be a form of love. I wanted to make a film about that desire, and further still, about the love we encounter in life, and the love we are ultimately bound to give.
