Udju azul di Yonta (The blue eyes of Yonta)

Yonta, a beautiful young woman much admired and the daughter of a former freedom fighter, and her brother Amílcar, named after the leader of the fight for independence – the extraordinary intellectual, agronomist, diplomat, and politician Amílcar Cabral – take part in a new struggle against the burden of the colonial legacy. While Amílcar and the other children embody the unwavering solidarity of African ethics, Yonta is in love with a former freedom fighter and courted by a young man shaped by incompatible European ideals – the blue eyes from a Swedish book that he copies out in an attempt to win her affection.

There is an Africa that weeps and an Africa that laughs. The image of the former, it seems to me, has ended up overshadowing that of the latter. So much so that some countries, in Europe and beyond, can only see Africa as a desolate, sorrowful and stagnant land. That is why I say that, even today, people often fail to realize that Africa laughs too, and laughs a great deal.
