In this intimate, site-specific variation of his ongoing project, Karim Ben Khelifa shifts the experience of war from cognition to embodiment. Inside a solitary booth, a shard of missile shrapnel from Ukraine’s frontline is presented to the visitor. As each person enters, their presence is detected and physiological signals captured non-invasively, translated into a low-frequency soundscape, where the visitor’s own heartbeat becomes a quiet, persistent rhythm of resilience within the wreckage.
How can one present war in its full brutality without overwhelming the audience? In 36,000 Ways is an attempt to bridge the distance between war’s reality and the public.
