Library of Dreams

Library of Dreams is an interactive narrative VR experience exploring how the human psyche responds to life under political pressure.
The journey begins in a Berlin apartment in 1936 before gradually dissolving into a shifting dreamscape where memories, identities and places merge. Moving between intimate interiors and surreal landscapes, viewers inhabit a sequence of interconnected dreams that flow across generations, blurring the boundaries between different eras.
Built from original dreams collected from historical archives and contemporary testimonies, Library of Dreams weaves together dreams recorded in Nazi Germany, the Soviet Union and present-day Russia. Rather than reconstructing historical events, the experience follows the logic of dreaming itself, allowing recurring fears, symbols and emotions to connect people separated by decades into a single shared landscape.

This project began shortly after Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine. While everyday life in Moscow continued as usual, reality itself felt like a fragile surface. What lay beneath it? Soon, many of my friends – and I – began having disturbing dreams. Together, these dreams revealed another reality where the emotional truth of the catastrophe surfaced.
I began collecting these dreams through online communities before expanding the research through Charlotte Beradt’s The Third Reich of Dreams and dreams recorded in the Soviet Union during the 1930s. Across these accounts, recurring symbols, places and emotions emerged, suggesting a shared dream universe. I began to wonder what story could be told within it.
Although I have emigrated, I continue to observe how authoritarian systems reshape the consciousness of those who remain – and my own. The constant dilemma between safety and action can divide a person’s inner self; this split is what I keep observing, in others and in myself.

For me, Library of Dreams is an attempt to speak about the unspeakable – the experience of oppression that silently changes the human psyche. It fascinates me that dreams from very different historical periods often share very similar patterns. It’s as if we discovered a universal language of human experience – uncensored, raw, revealing the truth in places where truth is not welcome. Through this shared experience, we can come one step closer to understanding the mechanisms through which fear and oppression transform people from within.
