synopsis

Juso per Ferie is an affectionate, ironic and irreverent documentary that traces the life and career of Galliano Juso, an unconventional producer, an indefatigable hunter of stories, a discoverer of talents and a visionary pioneer of Italian genre cinema. An eccentric and generous personality, Juso crossed five decades of Italian filmmaking while never abandoning his passion for risk and experimentation. He produced films that became part of popular culture – from Nico Giraldi’s poliziotteschi (cop movies) starring Tomas Milian to anarchic cult titles such as W la foca – alongside remarkable works by outsider auteurs and daring ventures with young filmmakers, often well ahead of their time. Two years after his passing, this documentary celebrates and honours him, seeking to revive on screen his imagination and his love for cinema.

Director’s Statement

I met Galliano towards the end of his career, when he produced my first two films. I was able to see his extraordinary virtues and his incredible faults up close – and, in time, I came to love him for both. I will always be grateful to him for allowing me to make my debut as a filmmaker and for entrusting me with the direction of Il grande Boccia, the project that had been the dream of his life for decades. I love cinema because of the encounters it brings about, because of its handmade nature, its outsider position and its courage. These are the values at the heart of Galliano’s life and his way of making films – values that helped shape the greatness of Italian cinema and that we cannot afford to lose. I feel privileged to have told the story, together with Steve Della Casa, of such an eclectic and vital figure in this documentary. Galliano’s enthusiasm for cinema continues to be a source of inspiration.
