synopsis

Place To Be is a light-hearted road movie about the unexpected friendship between an elderly woman and a middle-aged man travelling from Chicago to New York to return a lost racing pigeon, Intruder, to its owner.
Brooke Graham, a gentle woman, has devoted her life to her children since her husband’s death. Her quiet existence is turned upside down by an unwelcome visitor: a cheeky carrier pigeon that refuses to leave her home. Unable to abandon the bird, Brooke embarks on a quixotic journey. Along the way, she finds an unlikely travelling companion in Nelson Green, a businessman struggling to find his way forward after a series of setbacks. Brought together by a bird neither expected to care about, Brooke and Nelson slowly discover a connection that helps them confront their disappointments, rediscover a sense of purpose and wonder: is it ever too late to pursue the life you truly want?

Director’s Statement

Brooke Graham sets out to save a pigeon. By the journey’s end, it’s impossible to say who saved whom. After years making films about catastrophe, I wanted to tell a quieter story: a love story about an older woman. Not because the world needed another message, but because I wanted to observe what happens when two solitary people, brought together by something as absurd as a stubborn pigeon, surrender to chance. I have always trusted mystery more than certainty. Place to Be follows the invisible currents that carry us towards one another, reminding us that the smallest, most fragile moments can become our greatest guides. Cinema, like life, should remain untamed.
