synopsis
Following Harlan County U.S.A. and American Dream, Union Town completes Barbara Kopple’s trilogy on labour rights. Union Town chronicles essential workers in New York City’s lastmile delivery industry amid an explosive resurgence of organised labour in the nation’s largest metropolis. Interweaving struggles within UPS, Amazon, and the app-based bike delivery workforce, the film uncovers the face of modern labour and organising. Filmed over the course of three years, Union Town asks what solidarity means in a world divided between those who have power, and those who must fight for it.
Director’s Statement
My filmmaking journey began with labour. As a twenty-something, I had a wild opportunity to live amongst, and document, the striking miners of Harlan County, Kentucky, for two years. During this time, I was amazed by the people in our society willing to stand up and sacrifice their livelihoods for dignity and fairness. Their stories were inconsequential to mainstream media as they were the invisible people in service to the American promise of equality and prosperity for all, whose own never came to fruition.
Directing Harlan County U.S.A. and my follow-up film, American Dream, has shown me the necessity of workers’ rights in a just and equitable society. I am extremely honoured that after almost 35 years, I am able to revisit this topic in my new film during this exciting yet urgent time for labour.
I hope this film helps others to see the extraordinary strength and humanity in these people who are fighting not just for themselves, but for all of us, despite these incredible challenges they face. At its core, this film is an act of solidarity with workers across the US – and the world.
