Hombre al agua

Camilo, a Cuban lifeguard, saves Mexican businessman Abel from drowning. Grateful, Abel brings Camilo to Mexico, where he marries Abel’s daughter, Juana, and they have a child. But Camilo soon discovers his new life is part of Abel’s Machiavellian plan of manipulation and control. With his world collapsing, Camilo must uncover the plot and take control of his destiny. Will he find a way out, or remain trapped in the power game?

Hombre al Agua is a consequence of – and an open love letter to – many of the seas I’ve navigated in life. I wanted to question, with utmost creative freedom, aspects of the crisis of masculinity, the politics of intimate relationships, and the political soul of Latin America at this moment. All of this in the context of a fable set in the Yucatán Peninsula, in Mexico, where the characters find themselves in a comedy of errors that surfaces their inner angst and desires.
It is very challenging nowadays to make a film that pursues fiction as a means to sublimate our overwhelming reality. I know this statement sounds strange with the current state of freedom of expression. Therefore, a wonderful group of collaborators from Brazil, Cuba, Argentina, Uruguay, Italy and of course Mexico was put together to pursue this adventure and find ourselves creating a world rather than solving a problem. I’m full of gratitude to them for joining me in this demanding exploration. “Hombre al Agua” is the term used when somebody falls from a ship into the water. This term should be shouted, loudly and repeatedly, by someone on board, pointing out where the person that fell is in order to rescue them.
I would claim that in the stellar and decisive moments of humanity we experience, we always find ourselves playing the rescuer and the person that’s rescued at the same time. Maybe the same metaphor can be used for the phenomenon that occurs when we watch a film that we feel “changes our life”.
