Document: Keiji Haino
Document: Keiji Haino is Kazuhiro Shirao’s 2012 documentary tracing the life and work of Japanese musician, vocalist and improviser Keiji Haino, recipient of the Golden Lion for Lifetime Achievement at the Biennale Musica 2026.
Combining extensive live performance footage with interviews conducted over many hours with Haino and members of his long-running group Fushitsusha, the film follows his uncompromising search for new forms of musical expression. Rather than constructing a conventional biographical portrait, Shirao’s documentary allows Haino’s performances and reflections to reveal an artist whose practice has continually traversed the boundaries of noise, improvisation, rock and experimental music for more than five decades.
