Biografía de Jorge Luis Borges

A biography of Jorge Luis Borges working from an exhaustive review of the papers he left, the books he read, the places he went to. And with this, an attempt to decipher a very peculiar life: someone who lived like a hidden, underground warrior, whose cause was literature, literature conceived as a kingdom and as a landscape. If Cold War spies fought from their desks or from an uninhabited house to defend their half of the world, Borges strove from a library to elevate and broaden the territories of his own tribe: the people for whom the most important part of the universe is books, plots and words. This film is devoted to that secret pilgrim (to borrow from Le Carré, the king of all spies).

I read Borges for the first time when I was fourteen. My father was a writer and his tradition was very different: the winding line that, starting with Rabelais and Swift, finds its mysterious centre in the pataphysical grimaces of Alfred Jarry and ends up flowing – like a mountain river flows into a lake – into surrealism (or is it the other way around?). The point is that I began to read Borges as a surrealist author: Borges himself would have been scandalised. From that moment on, his books began to develop a gradual conquest over myself. At the age of 25, I thought only of Borges, and it is no exaggeration to say that the films I made afterwards were a way of dealing with that shadow. Truffaut once reproached Hitchcock for filming a dream in Spellbound. “It’s a mistake for you to film dreams, Hitchcock,” Truffaut pointed out. “All your films are dreams.” In the same way, someone could say to me: “Why are you making a film about Borges, Llinás, when you’ve done nothing but film Borges your whole life?” Only one thing redeems me from that obvious pleonasm. Throughout my life, I have tried to make adventure films, films in which the heroes are transported to unknown lands. I believe that in this film, Borges is imagined as a country, a dangerous country, full of threats and wonders, and that the more than five hours of footage are testimony to that adventurous exploration.
