La maison du vent (House of the wind)

Eighty-year-old Josette lives alone in Yaoundé, Cameroon. All her children have left for the West. She encourages them to build houses in Cameroon, a ploy to bring them back to her. But the unexpected bond she forms with Sarah, a young woman from her neighbourhood, shatters everything she has built her life on: her family, her responsibilities, and her hopes.

Originally from Cameroon, I’ve been living in France for 20 years now. I became French a few years ago. Since Cameroon doesn’t recognise dual nationality, I’m no longer Cameroonian on my papers.
In my script as in life, Josette is my mother.
La maison du vent is inspired by my mother’s life.
Like “Josette” in the screenplay, she has six children. And like me, my brothers and sisters have gone to live elsewhere, mainly in Europe.
After we all settled abroad, my mother used to live alone in our big family house in Yaoundé, Cameroon.
She wandered there every day like a guardian of the family archives, all the while harbouring the idea that one day we will return to our rooms and take our personalised plates.
My mother’s loneliness is what I want to evoke in this film.
